Has anyone else out there had their pediatrician recommend a hard-soled shoe for the same problem? If so, what kind of shoe did you buy? Did it also have ankle support? I'm planning to call the doctor back, but I'd like to hear from any moms who've had babies with the same problem. I'm looking for info specific to babies with the same physical problem that my daughter has.

You hit the nail on the head yet again. I called my pediatrician and she told me to go to a specific store here in Chico that carries a line of Stride Rite shoes, explain the issue with my daughter's feet, and they would put her into the appropriate shoe. The people at this store are trained specially for this. I would like to recommend a shoe from "Stride Rite" it's a white hard sole with a lace. My kids wore them from the day they started walking until they ran out of shoe size for them.

I would get a second or third opinion! From another pediatircian in a different office! I am a physical therapist who works with babies especially ones who are having breastfeeding problems. I don't like to have babies in postures they wouldn't assume by themselves. The exersaucer and jumper put a baby in a position they wouldn't normally assume at this age. I like to keep babies on the floor so they develop muscles in a proper sequence. As she rolls over, then pushes up to hands and knees she will develop her muscles.

Her foot rolling to the outsides might resolve if she were on the floor moving under her own power. We bought "high top" walking shoes made by Stride Rite from a neighborhood store in SF that has since gone out of business.

And although they looked like traditional "baby" shoes, the soles were rubber. I wonder if in so many words your pediatrician is trying to suggest having your daughter wear shoes that support her ankles more. Sorry to send a response so late, but better than never: Stride rite has pre walker shoes that are hard soled yet still geared towards the needs of baby feet. You should definately check it out! Yes as previously stated, Stride Rite is the place to go.

Are your daughter's feet pigeon toed pointed in. Both my children were born extremely pigeon toed.. My pediatrician suggested doing daily exercises with both kids so that the feet would relax a bit more and not be so pronounced. My youngest is still quite pigeon toed, but has had no difficulty with walking, running, climbing.. My children all have had feet problems. The best shoe out there is the first walkers they even make pre-walkers from Stride-Rite. There is a store in Mt. Shasta that sells them and in Chico.

I order mine online. They even cary wide, extra wide and 3X wide. Stride Rite makes excellent shoes for all the different stages of walking. They have Stage one that are just covers, Stage two has a hardish sole but still with some flex to it.

Stage two may be a good option for you. And, according to current advice, babies who are just learning to walk should go barefoot, whenever possible, to maximize their balance and stability. The foot is a complex structure of 26 bones and 35 joints, held together and supported by many ligaments.

A baby's foot is padded with fat and is highly flexible. When most toddlers start to walk, they have some poor muscle tone and weak ligaments in their feet, but this will improve over time as the feet strengthen. It's important for parents to realize that the primary reason young children wear shoes are for warmth and protection. Children's bones, joints, and ligaments provide them with sufficient support for routine childhood activities.

Carol Frey, associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery in Manhattan Beach, California, "Children are forced to walk with their feet further apart to keep their balance. Shoes are not necessary for support or development of the arch, they only protect the feet from the environment. Young children who are learning to walk are called "toddlers" because that's exactly what they do - they toddle.

Typically, they keep their legs wide apart and seem to hesitate between each step, jerking from side to side as they move one foot forward, then the next. Most children take their first steps between 11 and 14 months, but the normal range for conquering this feat is very broad.

Some tots walk as early as 8 months, others as late as 17 months. All children develop at their own pace, and should not be pushed into something they are not capable of doing. If your toddler is a late walker, don't worry - the progression of skills is far more important. If your child was a little late learning to roll over and crawl, chances are he'll need a few extra weeks or months for walking as well. As long as he keeps learning new things, there's no need to be too concerned.

Remember, all children develop skills differently. During your child's routine physical exams, your pediatrician will likely talk to you about your child's developing ability to move. Consult your child's doctor if your child does not:. Keep in mind that toddlers who are heavier or that were born prematurely often learn to walk a little later than others.

Of course you want to protect your child's feet when you are away from home or when it's cold outside. When purchasing a pair of shoes for your toddler it's best to follow this advice:. Have the shoes professionally fitted - which should include measuring each foot for length and width.
